Amalfi Coast Hiking

Vast mountains seem sketched in the sky high above rocky cliffs and a sparkling azure sea. Lemon trees burst with vivid scent and color, forming a patchwork with lush olive groves and vineyards. For centuries the Amalfi Coast has lured kings and queens, writers and artists to its sun-drenched islands and villages, and you'll soon discover why. Your daily hikes will challenge and entice the senses, as the steep terrain creates heart-pumping climbs and affords magnificent vistas. Allow yourself to be captivated by the glorious landscapes, decadent Neapolitan cuisine and local flavor along Italy's alluring coastline.

Day 1 Capri

Meet in Naples Shuttle into the mountains above the port town of Sorrento to a scenic picnic spot Savor spectacular vistas of the Amalfi Coast as you hike timeworn cobblestone paths and steps along the edge of Colli delle Fontanelle Ferry to the island of Capri and take a funicular up to our hotel located on the lively Piazzetta.

Days 2-3 Amalfi

Hike along stone paths to Monte Solaro, the island's highest point View the famous Faraglioni rock formations Walk or take the chairlift to Anacapri for lunch and some leisure time strolling through this chic town's shopping district  Sail to Amalfi, a colorful town with a long maritime history Stride through the Valle dei Mulini (or "Valley of Mills") past centuries-old paper mills and bubbling streams lined with wildflowers Relax over a cool drink in the hilltop village of Ravello, the "aristocrat of the Amalfi coast" Join our local guide for a walking tour through town.

Days 4-6 Positano

Hike along the magnificent Sentiero degli Dei (or "Path of the Gods") Continue to Positano, where pastel villas cling to cliffs above a labyrinth of shops and chic cafés Ascend through a forest of chestnut and alder to Santa Maria del Castello, the remains of a small castle Cap of your trip with a walk to Fornillo Beach for a refreshing swim in the sea.

SEASIDE COMFORT: Casual Inns

Hotel Mamela (1 night): Colorful bougainvillea drapes the white-stuccoed terraces of this four-star hotel, complete with a gorgeous swimming pool and just steps from Capri Town.

Hotel Bellevue Suite (2 nights): Perched high above the Gulf of Salerno, this charming retreat features simple bright guest rooms, access to a beautiful private beach and a solarium for relaxing.

Hotel Savoia (2 nights): A cheerful family-run hotel overlooking Positano's famed Piazzetta dei Mulini.

Having been brainwashed by my partner, about how good Backroads is, my expectations were extremely high and as the trip grew nearer. I became increasingly concerned I would be disappointed. How wrong I was - the leaders' tireless efforts to attend to every need, infectious knowledge and enthusiasm for the region as well as clear empathy with the locals ensured Amalfi was not a trip, but rather an 'experience.' The leaders' acute attention to detail, efforts to organize things with locals - such as dinner with Michelangelo, the tour of the paper factory in Amalfi and hiking with Maurizzio were most enjoyable. The leaders clearly worked well as a team and I was amazed by their boundless energy, constant state of happiness and driving skills! I think they struck a good balance between walking/hiking, educational and leisure activities. I'm pleased to say that the trip not only met, but exceded my expectations and without needed to be prompted, I am already looking forward to my next Backroads adventure.
