Congratulations to the winners of the 2016 Photo Contest!
This year's photo contest proved that our guests are amazing photographers. The winning photos were selected from thousands of images revealing the natural splendor, cultural sights and spontaneous moments on Backroads trips.
First place is awarded to Srikant Subramaniam fromStockholm to Copenhagen Bike Tour
Photographer's Notes: My annual vacation for the past dozen or so years has been a bike trip to a country that I had previously not visited. Traveling by bicycle gives me a completely different perspective and a chance to assimilate the sights and sounds at an unhurried pace. Having two amazingly bicycle friendly cities (Stockholm and Copenhagen) as bookends made this another in a long list of memorable Backroads vacations. I could not be more pleased at how this photograph turned out—especially the striking interplay among the vivid colors of the 17th century waterfront houses in Nyhavn (Copenhagen’s harbor district), the red boat and the azure sky—reminiscent of a Canaletto etching, perhaps? It was overcast and rainy the previous day, but the weather magically cleared up overnight to give us a perfect late summer’s afternoon!
Second place goes to Andrew Fedele from New Zealand Bike Tour
Third place goes to Kerry Griebenow from Glacier & Waterton Lakes Walking & Hiking Tour
Photographer's Notes: We watched the rising sun paint its magic on the mountain peaks behind Many Glacier Hotel before departing on our morning hike. The kayaks and canoes added just the right amount of color splash in the foreground, giving the final result. In an effort to travel lighter, I have traded carrying my Nikon DSLR for a Panasonic/LUMIX DMC-LX100, and so far I have found the results to be great. I do my miss some of the aspects of the larger camera, but I sure like hiking lighter!
Fourth place is awarded to Halsey Vandenberg from Czech Republic & Austria Family Breakaway Bike Tour
Photographer's Notes: This photo was taken after a morning hike up to the ruins of Dürnstein castle in Austria, where King Richard the Lionheart was kept prisoner during the Third Crusade. It overlooks the Danube river and the town of Dürnstein. We probably spent 20 minutes making all kinds of crazy shadows on that wall before heading back to town to continue our cycling adventure! Taken with a Sony A7II, ISO 100, 26 mm, f/11, and 1/160s.
Fifth place goes to Sutton Foster from New Zealand Walking & Hiking Tour
Also, congratulations to Karie Radtke, who won the $200 Patagonia gift certificate for participating in the contest voting!
