Italian Vineyards & Romantic Coast

La natura può più dell'arte: Nature is beyond all teaching—or so the Italian proverb goes. Here, in Tuscany's Maremma, nature abounds. Countryside, vineyards and farms. The clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The untouched Orbetello Lagoon. Like fine wine, Tuscany can be described in great detail. But to be learned, it must be experienced.

Book your Tuscany By the Sea Bike trip NOW! It's AMAZING!

Submitted October 2024

By Dawn

From Duxbury MA

My husband and I booked Backroads' Tuscany By The Sea 6-Day Bike Tour from October 10th to the 16th. It was an adventure worth every penny! If you like to bike and travel and meet new people, we highly recommend this trip. Our leaders Caterina, Sofia, and Helton were Top-Notch, full of helpful advice, and always delivered the fun! Our accommodations were clean, comfortable and dare I say luxurious. All of our meals were delicious and filling! Our bikes were well cared for and in excellent condition, even though we were on one of the last trips of the season! The food was non-stop, and delicious and gave us a good understanding of eating the local fare in Tuscany. Most of our meals and snacks were provided by the tour, we did have a few meals on our own. All were plentiful and tasty. We met so many interesting riders in our group and felt at ease from our first meal together. This outfit attracts like-minded folks, who are up for exercise, adventure, exploration, education, and seeking to expand their horizons. This is not your average sit-on-the-beach or by-the-pool vacation, this is getting out and living like a local, and seeing an area up close and personal! Each day you felt like you had earned dinner, dessert, and a cocktail! Too many highlights to choose from: The bike routes were well-planned out and easy to navigate. The rooms were spa-like. The wine was velvety. The weather was perfect. The afternoon on the sailboat was a treasured moment, especially when almost our entire group jumped into the sea for a swim! The dinner at the winery was magical. The lunch at the winery was decadent. Coffee in the Italian Cafes was dreamy. Riding by the sea, through medieval Tuscan villages, groves ripe with olives, and vineyards just past harvest in the Tuscan Sun was truly a trip worthy of 5 stars!

Everything was exceptional - the guides, the support team, the hotels, the dinners, the cycling routes, every morning's breakfast, the cycling equipment, everything!! I cannot praise Backroads enough. I am so fortunate to have seen a wonderful slice of Tuscany with Backroads. This was our second Backroads trip and it will not be our last.

Amazing Trip!!!

Submitted July 2024

By BP

From Chicago, IL

We planned this as a "once in a lifetime" trip as a collective 50th birthday trip with other couples and now can't wait to plan another Backroads trip! The trip felt flawless and I can't stop thinking about how positive our experience was.. Our leaders, Lorenzo and Lucia, were AMAZING! Thoughtful, thorough, caring, FUN. Our group hated saying good-bye to them! Nadia was wonderful in support and made every stop one to look forward to with delicious and healthy snacks . The rides were beautiful! We chose the longer route every morning and hitting the medieval villages at the top of mountains were our favorites. The inclines were no joke, so thank God for our e-assist bikes! And, thank God for the long rides to balance out all of the delicious food and wine. Not sure how we'll find another trip to top this one, but we look forward to trying!

Tuscan villages & countryside by bike- a thrilling week!

Submitted July 2024

By Amy

From Nashville TN

A very unique way to experience Italy's Tuscan countryside! This trip had it all- wonderful leaders, wine tours, delicious local meals, upscale accommodations, lots of fun bike roads with E bike option for tough elevation climbs ("spicy" as Lorenzo says). We had a wonderful trip.

Good riding, great food and wine, epic dips in the sea

Submitted July 2024

By Carly

From Washington, DC

This is our fourth trip with Backroads, and we loved it! Our priorities for this trip were (1) good riding, (2) good wine, (3) access to water, and we got all three... and then some! Our Trip Leaders were incredible - they thought ahead about every detail, and they did their best to make everyone's trip incredibly meaningful. It goes without saying that the food was incredible - from Michelin stars to mom-and-pop osterias, from charcuterie boards to gelato. There was no shortage of great wine either, with several incredible vineyard stops. We love the longer rides (we almost always take the long options), and we were definitely challenged by the climbs. And we'll never forget our swim into the "blue cave" during our afternoon adventure on a 100-year-old ship. This trip is probably second only to our Backroads trip in Croatia... if you're thinking about Italy, do it!

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

So Much Fun!

Submitted June 2024

This experience was so much fun and much more than a bike ride in Tuscany. We were immersed in the culture of Italy's food, landscapes, and the wonderful people who live there. Beautiful vistas, villages and entertaining experiences all made for a grand visit worth repeating.

Fantastic vacation - great location, hotels, dining, biking!

Submitted June 2024

By David

From Michigan

This biking trip was a great mix of Tuscany, both away from the coast and along the shore areas. We went late May, and had wonderful weather (most sunny, no rain, temp high 70's to around 80F). Go earlier if you want cooler temps, and later if you want warmer water for swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. Wonderful hotels and dining, too. Backroads finds great people for their staff, and invests in training them well - our leaders and support person were all friendly, kind, knowledgable and organized. Everything went so smoothly. Highly recommend this trip as a great introduction to Italy.

This was our second, but far from last, Backroads cycling trip. We had all the flexibility we wanted for routes and levels of activity, the hotels and meals were top notch and our leaders Bruno and Caterina couldn't have been better. Thanks Backroads for creating another wonderful experience for our family.
