We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The slower pace, relaxed approach to life and old-world qualities in Portugal are some of the highlights of this spectacular region and are reflected in the hotels and restaurants on this trip. That said, service can lack a sense of urgency when compared with the service found in other parts of Europe. While the hotels we've chosen are some of the finest in the region, they may seem a bit simpler than the Backroads European standard. The same can be said for Portuguese cuisine, which is traditionally a celebration of local flavors but is also a bit more rustic than that of other places we visit in Europe.
Due to island weather conditions, the day and time of water activities may vary somewhat by departure. If an activity is canceled because of bad weather, your leaders will have alternative options planned.

A First Time Experience
My wife, daughter and I had not gone on a group trip before. Backroads was our first. The group had 23 guests which turned out just fine. The conversations with the guests were stimulating and interesting. The hiking and biking exceeded our expectations. Contributing to our experience was the absolute beauty of the Azures with topography and ocean views beyond description. Our trip leaders were professional and personable. Their sole goal was to make our trip comfortable and enjoyable. They succeeded.
Amazing Trip on So Many Different Levels
The guides were excellent, the scenery superb, hotels were excellent and the members of the group were great.
Absolutely Incredible!
This trip was absolutely incredible. Our guides were wonderful....welcoming, friendly and fun. All of them were knowledgeable about the area and culture and they were happy to share this with us. They also took care of every detail of the trip. The accommodations on the trip were top-notch and the food was delicious. All the hiking and biking routes were beautiful and fun. We could go at our own pace and there was plenty of time to stop for the breath-taking views to rest and take pictures. The whale watching tour was exciting and even though we didn't see whales that day, we got to see three different species of dolphins :-) I'm definitely glad that I went on this trip.

A spectacular experience in the Azores!
Our week in the Azores was an exceptionally great one, with the absolute best Backroads leaders. For lovers of scenic hiking and biking, this is a trip for you!

Ohhhh what a birthday!!!
Each and every detail thoughtfully planned out and personalized for every guest. We had a large age and activity range and no one felt left out. The scenery in the Azores us exquisite and met some fabulous people. The leaders genuinely cared for each and every one. Food and wine and ( unexpected) surprise birthday treats were awesome! Activities geared on each day according to everyone's needs and when high winds and rain cancelled the kayaking ...shift on the fly...we went beer tasting to a local brand new craft brewery! Made excellent new friends with lots and lots of laughter....hit this one out of the park Backroads!!

Beyond my expectations!
I was not prepared for just how beautiful the island of San Miguel is. It's lush beauty, friendly and generous people and outstanding landscapes are truly unforgettable and will live in my memory forever.

Absolutely amazing trip of a lifetime!
The Azores are an absolute marvel of nature. The panoramic vistas and the sheer variety of experiences are astounding. Imagine cycling beside the stunning coastline, with the ocean breeze accompanying you as you traverse through lush green pastures. The hiking trails lead you through verdant fields that seem to touch the sky, offering a sense of tranquility and adventure all at once. The culinary delights are a testament to the island's rich culture, with every meal being a celebration of flavor and tradition. The thermal springs are a sanctuary of relaxation, their warm embrace a soothing contrast to the cool Atlantic air. Kayaking in the waters of the Blue Lagoon is like paddling through a living painting, vibrant and utterly serene. Perhaps the most thrilling of all is the opportunity to witness the majestic dance of whales and dolphins from the edge of a speeding boat, a moment where time stands still and nature's grandeur takes center stage. The journey is made all the more memorable by the passionate guides whose love for the Azores is infectious, and the camaraderie shared with fellow explorers adds a layer of joy to the experience. The Azores are not just a destination; they are a revelation, a place where every moment is a masterpiece waiting to be discovered. 🌿🐋🌊 What are the best months to visit the Azores? Amazing Trip!
We had the great fortune to be on the inaugural Backroads trip of the Azores. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the guides were fabulous. They were so knowledgable and friendly. They anticipated our every need and obviously took lots of pride in their country. The hotels were very nice and the food was fresh and local. We can't wait to do another Backroads trip!
