Itinerary

Days 1-2
Start your adventure by fueling up with a delicious lunch of classic Argentine fare • Local wranglers saddle up horses before you head into the backcountry, gaucho-style • Ride in the vast steppe landscape, with views of vast Lake Nahuel Huapi, the namesake of the national park you’ll spend the week exploring • Cozy mountain hospitality and chic design combine at our serene woodland hotel • Climb to a soaring alpine box canyon where a delicate meadow above tree line is overshadowed by walls of granite • Stroll the rustic frontier village of Villa La Angostura.

Nights 1-2
Surrounded by forest and gardens, this rustic-chic hotel full of exposed wood and broad windows feels like it brings a deep breath of nature inside. (pool, spa)

Days 3-4
Hike up the rugged slopes of Cerro Villegas with sweeping lake views and discover a high-altitude cave gaping into the mountainside • Take to white water rafts for a splash-filled ride down the Class II and III rapids of the RÃo Manso • Venture high into the alpine meadow of Pampa Linda, where waterfalls tumble down the cliffs from spectacular hanging glaciers • Listen for the rumble of glaciers calving high on the mountain, which earned the park’s highest peak the name Cerro Tronador (Mount Thundering) • Gather alfresco for a classic Argentine-style asado, or cookout—as much a culinary experience as it is a social one.

Nights 3-4
A cozy hotel in the heart of Nahuel Huapi National Park where we’re welcomed with family-run hospitality on a bluff overlooking the lake.

Days 5-7
Meet up with sturdy hybrid bikes to spend the morning cycling a mix of country byways and dirt roads along the shore of Lago Gutiérrez • Take a heart-pumping detour of the switchbacks of Balcón Gutiérrez (Gutiérrez Balcony) for soaring lake views, or beeline it to lunch • Take in a brewery tour and beer tasting in Colonia Suiza, a frontier village whose whimsical rustic architecture leans into the heritage of its Swiss founders • Opt for an afternoon long option pedaling a section of the Circuito Chico, a world-renowned scenic route which ribbons high above the Lake District’s lakes • Hike through trees shaggy with moss and chase sweeping vistas of Lake Nahuel Huapi on the slopes of Cerro Llao Llao • Tackle a morning climb to the summit of Cerro Campanario for a last view of the national park and its lakes.

Nights 5-6
Serenity reigns in this shade-dappled complex of suites and cabañas tucked between tall trees. In winter, this is a prime location at the foot of a popular ski lift; in summer it’s a sleepy forest crossroads on the outskirts of Bariloche. (pool, spa)

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The Lake District’s beautiful yet rugged topography limits the number of available roads. Although we’ve carefully crafted this itinerary to feature a mix of the region’s most scenic paved and dirt road-biking routes, at times we encounter small trafficked areas, as well as a few sections of dirt roads with loose rocks and sand. Of course, you’re always welcome to jump in the shuttle to avoid the busier or rougher sections of the route. Our hikes through Patagonia’s captivating terrain follow rocky and sometimes very dusty and uneven paths, many of which are remote and do not intersect with roads. Vehicles will get us to and from the trailheads, but the nature of these trails is such that we won’t see our vehicles along the route. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.
Trips with a small number of guests may be supported by one Backroads Trip Leader and a team of knowledgeable local guides. There will always be at least two people hiking on the trail with you.
