We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The combination of Iceland’s prolific waterfalls, vast icefields, vibrant green landscape and warm ocean currents makes this island like no other place in the world. The island’s climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that can bring sun, wind, fog, sleet, rain and snow all in the same day (or hour!). Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for every day of the trip. In addition, the fluctuating weather might result in mid-trip itinerary changes, but your Backroads Trip Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.
Luxury Iceland-style usually means modern, simple and nicely appointed buildings that prioritize location and views over plush amenities or landscaping. Due to the remoteness of our properties, dinners tend to be a local buffet-style affair with limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience.
To access the best routes and most unique hotels in this expansive region, we’ve incorporated multiple shuttles into your itinerary.

Awesome trip
This trip was awesome. It had a little of everything: lots and lots of backcountry activity (mostly hiking), several excursions with local providers (such as the glacier climbers, the puffin expert out on the peninsula, and the zodiac boat folks), fantastic accommodations, and, total surprise, a well-curated menu of truly amazing food. I should also add that the Backroads structure provided lots of social time with other travelers. On that note, I'm so glad they offered this adults/early-twenties tier, as it worked out great. Finally, the guides were outstanding. Can't say enough about them. The trip was expensive, but I feel like we got excellent value for our money.
It was everything I could have hoped for and more!
If you like a mix of hiking, culture, and thrill, and don't mind getting a little wet, then this is the trip for you. I've never seen landscapes like the ones Iceland has to offer, and I've never had more knowledgable, helpful, and friendly guides on a trip.
