Day 1
A scenic boat ride transports you to Ischia, a volcanic island renowned for its thermal springs and made ever more famous by novelist Elena Ferrante • Visit historic Castello Aragonese • Settle into your home for the night and enjoy an aperitivo at our welcome reception.
Night 1
An inviting Ischian island retreat nestled amid 7 acres of natural flora, including ancient olive groves, fruit orchards and fresh herbs. Leading Hotels of the World property. (pool, spa)
Days 2-3
Experience alluring Capri and its hidden coves • The island's limestone peaks, flower-lined lanes and picturesque panoramas have captivated visitors for centuries • Hike to the isle’s highest point atop Monte Solaro and savor a superb vista of the iconic Faraglioni sea stacks • Walk through Villa San Michele and its gardens, called “the most fantastic beauty” by writer Henry James • Walk the idyllic town of Capri and hike its stunning coastline • From our hotel 1,000 feet above the sea, sip limoncello and drink in views of Capri • Learn the secrets of the region's cuisine in a festive cooking class.
Nights 2-3
This luxury mansion treats guests to what Islands magazine calls a "magnificent view of the Mediterranean and a jaw-dropping panorama across the sparkling Bay of Naples." A Relais & Châteaux member. (pool, spa)
Days 4-6
Zip across the water by private motorboat to Positano, where pastel-colored villas cling to steep cliffs • Explore the town’s charming shops and chic cafés, perhaps stopping to gaze up at the majolica-covered dome of Santa Maria Assunta church • Boat along the magical Costiera Amalfitana, a World Heritage site • Discover Amalfi’s ancient archways and grand cathedral with a local expert • Walk past gurgling streams through groves of chestnut, pine and olive trees • Centuries-old paper mills set amid ferns and wildflowers dot the hiking trail to Amalfi • Walk through Ravello, known as the “aristocrat of the Amalfi Coast.”

Nestled into the cliffside and set in an original 13th-century monastery, this contemporary oasis offers sea and mountain views, an infinity pool and is just a 10-minute walk to the center of Amalfi. (pool, spa)

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The majority of the routes on this trip are relatively short, but moderately strenuous with occasional steep sections. The most challenging aspect is the dramatic elevation change. We're often climbing or descending steps and cobblestone paths to reach stunning Mediterranean vistas and charming cliffside towns. While you're free to take your time navigating these routes, you should feel comfortable with some steep ascents and descents. Sturdy, lightweight hiking shoes with robust tread and ample ankle support are recommended. Backroads provides two walking poles per guest.
Our routes through this captivating terrain are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. In some cases our shuttles will get us to and from the trailheads, but due to the nature of these trails, we usually won't see our vehicles along the route. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.

A Magnificent way to experience the Amalfi Coast
This was my first Backroads trip and it was an unforgettable experience! While I've been to the area once before many years ago, traveling with Backroads gave me the opportunity to much more than I could on my own. The hotels were amazing, each a special property with interesting histories and wonderful food. I loved the diversity of the hikes we did, and the option to tailor each day to your own preferences-hiking longer or not as you wish. I especially loved seeing Capri from the water; 2 days we had longer boat rides on a beautiful vessel that allowed to appreciate the Amalfi coast in the best way-from the water. What really made this trip amazing was the people in our group and our exceptional leaders. I wouldn't hesitate to take another Backroads trip now that I've experienced one for myself. Everything was so well organized and supported that it made travel a breeze.

My trip to The Amalfi Coast far exceeded my expectations!
This trip was really one of the best trips that I have ever taken. Petra and Filippo were the best guides. They were always encouraging and helpful. Their experience was evident at every turn. I went on this trip by myself and always felt included both by the guides as well as the interesting group of people from all over the country that were in my group. I am planning on taking at least one or maybe two BACKROADS trip in 2020.
