We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Our hikes through Patagonia’s captivating, yet rugged, terrain climb rocky and sometimes uneven paths, many of which are remote and do not intersect with roads. Vehicles will get us to and from the trailheads, but due to the nature of these trails, we won’t see our vehicles along the route. Ample trail support in the form of snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.
Most hikes on this itinerary are inside Argentine national parks and, unlike other Backroads Walking & Hiking trips, regulations require a certified local guide to accompany us. We offer flexibility by dividing into several groups of different paces, with each group hiking in the company of a local guide.
In order to experience the full grandeur of Argentina's Patagonia region, we spend more time shuttling and on boat crossings on this trip than on a typical Backroads trip. This enables us to explore the incredible variety of ecosystems and scenery this region has to offer.
Trips with a small number of guests may be supported by one Backroads Trip Leader and a team of knowledgeable local guides. There will always be at least two people hiking on the trail with you.
Because of Patagonia's extreme weather conditions and strong winds, mid-trip itinerary changes are possible. Boat crossings can be cancelled, which may delay our arrival to or departure from the hotel Estancia Cristina. If severe weather affects our planned activities, your Trip Leaders will find alternative activities that you're sure to enjoy. Expect the unexpected in this remote region, including slow or no internet and the occasional ATM possibly running out of cash. It's all part of the adventure!

Absolutely stunning!
Everything about this trip was top shelf. The hotels, the hiking, the transportation and especially our guides, Alessandro and Ezequiel. The small touches, like the daily snacks or the Mate lesson, added to the overall experience. Patagonia is beautiful and worth every moment & dollar spent. I highly recommend this trip!
Trip of a lifetime
I am just back from this trip and am now looking at ideas for my next Backroads adventure that will be as memorable as Patagonia was. Our guides, Alessandro and Vidal, were incredible. Everything was perfection. The hiking is spectacular, the accommodations absolutely amazing for this remote location and every meal was fantastic. Add to all of this a wonderful group of fellow travelers and it was a trip of a lifetime.
Trip of a lifetime!
Patagonia takes a while to get to but is absolutely worth it! Backroads has a perfect balance of activity and relaxation planned for each day. Our trip leaders were sensational. I will definitely travel with Backroads again and will recommend using them to everyone.
A trip full of wonder and beauty
We did a private tour and it was amazing from the pre-trip information to all of the hiking, guides, travel logistics, lodging and food! El Chalten and Estancia St. Christina are unforgettable places full of such stark beauty. Our guides Luca and Vidal made the trip fun every day with learning, positive attitudes, interesting stories and being interested in getting to know us. This is a great way to see a very large region and not feel like you missed something important (but don't feel like you were rushing either). Such great care and attention to details...we could just enjoy the whole experience (every single second of it!).
Patagonia is an amazing and special place.
The entire trip was spectacular, but our favorite part was staying at Estancia Cristina. The beauty and isolation of the estancia is something that people can rarely find. A two-hour (beautiful) boat ride is the only way to get there so it is truly off the beaten path.
Wonderful!
We could not have asked for better guides, better views, better anything. This trip was wonderful and our guides, Sofia & Carlos, were the BEST. It's a long flight but to see the Fitz, travel across Lake Argentina, estancia, EOLO - it was worth it. I liked the route selection so if you needed an easy day you could take it. The scenery was gorgeous. We also had a wonderful group of strangers who melded together very well making the trip even better.
Don't hesitate, this is an amazing trip
Patagonia is an amazing place, and this trip started out wonderful and got better from there. We loved the variety of vistas and hiking terrain, wildlife, cool plants, and glaciers up close and distant. We learned tons about the culture and history of this area. The days at Estancia Christina are magical, and would make the travel worth it, even if you went no where else in Patagonia. The fossil canyon hike is one of the top 4 hikes I've ever taken, in many years of exploring. Our guides, Ben and Pete, were fantastic, but a special shout out to the local guides at each location who were really helpful, knowledgeable and inspiring. This was our first international Backroads trip, and the first with local guides, and that was a huge plus. The food and hotels were also extraordinary.
Beyond my imagination!
My fiancé and I knew the trip was going to be amazing but it surpassed all of our expectations from the scenery, lodging, guides, and other guests. We both agreed that it is one of the best trips we have ever been on. It was nice to not have to plan anything and just go with the flow of the trip. Magical moments happened everyday! Shoutout to Dani and Sofia for being the most wonderful trip leaders. We left Patagonia with no regrets because we got to see everything, eat everything, and meet some great people that we will remain friends with.
Unbelievable
This trip exceeded all expectations- every day had multiple experiences that would each be *the* highlight of an ordinary trip (and I would have never found on my own). Our guides (shout out to Gorka and Dani), food, hotels and hikes were all top-notch. Hotels Estancia Cristina and Eolo were experiences themselves. We loved every second of our trip

A MUST TRIP
Due to overcast skies we didn't see the peaks of Fitz Roy or Cerro Torre. We hiked Fossil Canyon and the boardwalk at Moreno Glazier in rainy and windy conditions. Yet the scenery we saw was jaw dropping amazing and the wildlife ever present. Every day brought new sights and adventures. Estancia Cristina had a special aura. Fossil canyon (even in high winds and rain) was magical. The food was top notch, the ambiance of Patagonia alluring and our guides Ana and Luca were the best. Don't pass on this trip!!!
