Dolce Tempo Journey amid Sound of Music Landscapes
In this land once coveted by emperors and serenaded by von Trapps, history has left many marks. So it’s remarkable how eternal it all seems. Elegant hotels with proud traditions. An alpine farm passed across generations. The lazy waters of a mountain lake, inviting you to float beneath a cloud-studded sky. Despite all their history, the Alps put a spotlight on the here and now.
Highlights
- Revel in mountaintop meadows and see-forever views amid landscapes where Julie Andrews warbled that “the hills are alive”
- Experience the spectacular hospitality of a castle-hotel and a chic modern retreat, complete with sprawling spas and Michelin stars
- Stroll along lakeside esplanades and through the colorful lanes of half-timbered villages
- Enter the culturally rich world of our local Backroads friends, who join us on hikes and invite us into their distilleries, farms and more

Itinerary
Days 1-2
Behold mountain vistas where scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed • Cable cars whisk us to high alpine meadows at the top of the world • Behold the breathtaking fjord-like lakes of Traunsee and Fuschlsee from high above, only to later take the plunge in their inviting blue waters • A taste of homemade apfelstrudel (apple strudel) hits the spot trailside at a cozy alpine hut • Rest your head at a medieval castle-turned-hotel set on a peninsula surrounded by turquoise waters • Schuhplattler dancers treat us to a lively performance of local music • Dip into hearty alpine specialties at a country restaurant tucked into a cottage in the woods.
Nights 1-2
Set on a wooded promontory on Lake Fuschl, this castle was built as the country residence of the archbishops of Salzburg in 1450—and remains consistently luxurious. (pool, spa)
Days 3-6
Check out the storybook lakeside villages of St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen • Walk along the panoramic hilltop that borders Germany and Austria • Cowbells softly clang in nearby pastures as you sample local artisanal cheeses at a mountain farmhouse • Wander at twilight through the peaceful cobbled lanes of 900-year-old Berchtesgaden • Pay your respects to the somber history of the region at the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre • Hop a scenic boat ride across the long narrow expanse of cliff-wrapped Königsee • Stroll beneath the highest waterfall in Germany and ascend via a mix of trails and cable cars to soaring Jenner Peak • Toast to our Austrian and German adventures in a guided tasting of wines from both sides of the border.
Nights 3-5
Nestled in the Bavarian Alps, an ultramodern property with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. (pool, spa)
