We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Our hikes through Lofoten's captivating rugged terrain climb rocky, uneven paths with some steep sections, many of which are spotted with mud or boulders. Vehicles or boats will get us to and from the trailheads, but the remote nature of these trails means we offer fewer route options. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.
We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van. Occasionally we also hike with local guides, allowing us to offer even more support options on these routes.
The Lofoten Islands are rich in heritage and rustic charm, and while Backroads has selected the best properties in the places we visit, history and character often outweigh elegance and luxury in this remote corner of Norway. While two of our hotels, Nusfjord Rorbuer and Reiner Rorbuer—traditional waterfront rorbuer (fishermen's cabins)—offer simpler amenities than the typical Backroads property, they provide us with the greatest access to the best hiking in the region. It's also worth noting that these cabins are set up more like shared apartments, with private bedrooms and bathrooms, and a common living room area that includes a small kitchen, rather than typical hotel room—all part of the charm!
The combination of Norway’s many waterfalls, steep mountains, vibrant green landscapes, warm ocean currents and deep fjords makes this country unlike any other. Norway’s climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that may bring sun, wind, fog, sleet and rain in the same day (or hour!). Or it could rain all day, every day. Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for each day of the trip. In addition, the fluctuating weather may result in ferry or mid-trip itinerary changes, but your Backroads Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.

Our Norway trip was amazing!
The trails were challenging but the guides make them doable. The accommodations, especially in the fishing villages were quaint and comfortable — the best way to stay there. Hokan helped me track down the northern lights and we saw them on our last night!
Hiking in the Lofotens August 2024
Spent the last year anticipating hiking in the beautiful Lofotens while staying in rorbuers. Trip even exceeded my expectations. Scenery was incredible. Leaders competent, confident, personable. Hikes were challenging, but team leaders and guides created environment in which we could feel confident and successfully hike. Lodging was comfortable in remodeled historic buildings. Leaders had sought out variety of tasty meals based on locally sourced foods. All members of our group were delightful. Definitely one of our best trips.
Unreal experience. VERY challenging.
We've been on 4 prior Backroads trips and this was by far the most aggressive in terms of hiking. But the payoff is incredible!!! The scenery is amazing, and the accommodations are so unique and character filled. The food is excellent and incredibly local and fresh. Be prepared for steep and aggressive uphills (and downhill). But it is absolutely stunning scenery. Take advantage of the 24 hours of light!!

Breathtaking
First, this trip is not for the faint of heart (steep), but if you review the mileages and elevations and it's within your wheelhouse than you will be BLOWN AWAY. Breathtaking views, sensational trip leaders, fascinating local culture. You will not regret this one, thanks BR!
Fantastic Experience
This was a fantastic trip run by young, energetic, passionate guides. The terrain in the Lofoten Islands is steep and technical, so if you are looking for amazing beauty along with challenging hikes, this is the trip for you.
Wonderful and Challenging
This trip was amazing! 10/10 would recommend to anyone. The scenery was absolutely stunning. The leaders were amazing. Thank you for such a memorable trip!!
