We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van. Occasionally we also hike with local guides, allowing us to offer even more support options on these routes.
The historic hotels on this trip offer proximity to our favorite hikes and fantastic views. Guest rooms are clean and comfortable but simpler and smaller than the typical Backroads standard. Also, due to the remote locations of our properties, dinners on this trip tend to be either buffet-style or a set or limited-choice menu.
The combination of Norway’s many waterfalls, steep mountains, vibrant green landscapes, warm ocean currents and deep fjords makes this country unlike any other. Norway’s climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that may bring sun, wind, fog, sleet and rain in the same day (or hour!). Or it could rain all day, every day. Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for each day of the trip. In addition, the fluctuating weather may result in ferry or mid-trip itinerary changes, but your Backroads Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.
