Itinerary

Day 1
Meet in Seattle and board the ferry to Bremerton, enjoying breathtaking views on your voyage across the Puget Sound • Arrive at our renowned waterfront resort and head out on a hike through old-growth forest, past gurgling streams and over picturesque bridges with peekaboo views of Hood Canal throughout • Take an afternoon dip in the resort’s indoor saltwater pool, explore the lush property or find a cozy spot to relax and relish the beautiful vistas.

Night 1
This enchanting retreat on the scenic shore of the Hood Canal has been welcoming guests for over a century. Designed in classic Craftsman style with an inviting beach-house vibe, the property has become a Pacific Northwest mainstay. Fun fact: Guests of the original resort—a collection of orange-and-black-striped canvas tents—had to arrive by canoe, as there were no roads to Alderbrook in 1913. (pool, spa)

Days 2-3
Journey to Olympic National Park for a hike along Hurricane Ridge, one of the park’s most illustrious vantage points • Settle in at our historic lodge tucked away in a spruce and hemlock forest on the shore of Lake Crescent • Explore a lush rainforest and discover Sol Duc Falls, a unique and beloved local attraction • Spend the afternoon as you please at our lakeside lodge, whether lounging on the sunporch or diving into glacially carved Lake Crescent.

Nights 2-3

Days 4-6
A scenic ferry ride marks your official passage into Canada: Part II of your Pacific Northwest adventure begins! • Arrive at our luxurious Salish Sea-side resort and enjoy an afternoon paddle through the Chain Islets • Hike along a lush forested trail to the top of Mount Work for sweeping views of Vancouver Island, the Olympic Mountains and the Gulf Islands • Follow a serene shaded path past a waterfall to a remote beach • Discover the Victorian architecture and upscale shops of charming Oak Bay Village • Relax and unwind with a spa treatment or soak in our hotel’s oceanfront mineral pools.

Nights 4-5
Overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca with views of Mount Baker, this elegant English Tudor-style hotel offers new-world charm, luxury and modern conveniences in the peaceful community of Oak Bay. (pool, spa)

Excellent way of having the Pacific NW experience!
Our leaders were awesome - knowledgable, ready to assist and flexible especially in terms of trails. They were quick to assess the different ability levels and pick beautiful trails accordingly. We had the full experience of the Pacific ocean, lakes and even a waterfall combined with beautiful woods. The accommodations were excellent and so was the food. Having access to a water taxi dedicated to the BR guests was such a special luxury. Thanks to the whole team for a job very well done!!

Our first visit to Vancouver. What a variety of experiences!
The San Juan Islands captured our interests and passion. The combination of hiking, excellent hotels, boat transfers and engaging with the leaders and guests was enriching! We were also blessed with excellent weather, too. As I love hiking in natural settings, photography, great food with terrific people, this trip hit all the marks. This was our 4th Backroads trip and we expect to do more!

Our first Backroads trip, but definitely not our last!
The San Juan Islands and the Olympic Peninsula are gorgeous, and it was so nice to have Backroads take care of all the planning and logistics so we could see highlights of the region, while staying at beautiful inns with fantastic food. The trip leaders really added to our enjoyment, with lots of local knowledge. The hiking routes were well thought out, with days alternating between tougher longer hikes and shorter ones. This part of the country necessitates a fair amount of travel by van and ferry, and I was initially wary of staying in 4 hotels in 5 nights (plus a hotel of your choice the night before and after the trip), but each hotel had it's own charm and perks, and in the end, I'm glad to have seen them all, even though I wouldn't do it that way if I was doing all the driving! The group dynamics were excellent, with 3 families with kids in their late teens or early 20s. We were so impressed at how Backroads anticipated all our needs (the post-hike cold beverages were a really happy surprise!) and how lovely it is to be able to not be limited to hikes that return to the same starting location, as we are when we travel with just our family. I'm already looking through the catalogs to choose our next adventure!
Outstanding in all respects!!
Our trip leaders greeted us day one and took us on a journey through the Pacific Northwest without a hitch and with the utmost care to be sure each guest had a great experience. The trip exceeded my expectations on all counts!!
Breathtaking views, dynamic trails & world-class cuisine
My mom and I had never gone on any type of organized trip before this tour and it was a truly magical and transformative experience. Imagine breathtaking vistas at every turn, incredibly diverse trails from water-adjacent pathways to sun-kissed scrambles to subalpine Hills, all punctuated by gourmet Pacific Northwest fare meal after meal. We were surprised/delighted by the wonderful guides and fellow travelers we met during the trip. Cannot wait to travel with Backroads again.

Most memorable trip of my life!
I had a great time exploring beautiful Washington State and British Columbia! The views were amazing and there was truly something for everyone! My fiance even proposed to me on the top of Mount Constitution, located on Orcas Island!

Most Incredible Trip We Have Ever Taken
My husband and I travel a lot and this was our first Backroads trip. We hope to go on many more with our fabulous leaders, Trina, Jessie and Roxy. This amazing team of women made the whole trip for us. The schedule was busy and every day an adventure. The NW scenery was magnificent. We were challenged in our hikes and always felt so proud we had accomplished more than we had imagined possible- all because of our leaders encouragement. Lunches were delicious and fresh daily. Looking forward to another trip soon.
Exactly what I hoped for & more!
