Itinerary
Days 1-3
Climb past wind-gnarled cypresses and through lush groves of southern beeches on the slopes of Cerro Benitez for an introduction to the vast vistas of Patagonia • Settle into a rustic-chic working estancia (ranch) built on the sweeping range by 19th-century English homesteaders • A local hiking guide points out marine fossils and traces of ancient human inhabitants as we wander the volcanic Sierra de Baguales, the natural border between Chile and Argentina • Walk rugged routes that few outsiders see among the 86-square-mile property of our estancia • Watch out for wild horses, guanacos (the llama’s wild ancestor) and the massive wingspan of soaring Andean condors.
Nights 1-3
This 19th-century ranch built by English settlers welcomes guests at a backcountry outpost of elegance, with a host of outdoor activities on offer and sweeping views of the 86-square-mile property.
Days 4-5
Set off on trails into Torres del Paine National Park, hiking through high-mountain rain forest and across spindly suspension bridges • Climb to a viewpoint of imposing Lago Grey, whose waters are filled with drifting icebergs that have calved from the glacier looming above it • Embark on a boat tour of Lago Grey to get up close and personal with its floating icy icons • Feeling like a speck at the feet of some of nature’s most super-sized scenery is a unique sensation of awe • Hike sections of the park’s most renowned backpacking circuit, the W Trek, along soaring trails suspended above Grey Glacier.
Nights 4-5
“Location, location, location” doesn’t even begin to cover the absolute treat of staying at this cozy national park lodge set directly on the glacial waters of iconic Lago Grey.
Days 6-8
Get close-up views of the Torres del Paine from the lookout at Lake Nordenskjöld • Check out the Salto Grande waterfall where it thunders through a cut of black volcanic rock among the sage-covered pampas • Grab a massage treatment or simply relax in the inviting hot pools of our serene spa hotel • Twisted beech trees around us, rock faces lined with ice overhead and grand vistas of turquoise lakes spread below—the famed Valle del Francés hike is a worthy grand finale • Toast to the hiking trip of a lifetime with a view and perhaps a local vintage • Say goodbye to this larger-than-life land with one last morning ramble alongside the vast braid of the Serrano River.
Nights 6-7
Striking interior design and top-notch spa and dining services become astonishing luxuries at trail’s end when you return to this chic property just outside the park gates. (pool, spa)

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
In Patagonia, you can experience several weather conditions in a single day. This region is defined by its unpredictable mix of strong winds, cold temperatures, flurries, rain, and sunshine.
Because of these conditions, mid-trip itinerary changes are possible on this trip. Rest assured that if severe weather affects our planned activities, your Trip Leaders are prepared to offer alternate activities as warranted.
Due to the remote locations of this trip, all meals are provided by hotels. Shopping and ATMs are only available at the start and end of the trip in Puerto Natales. Each hotel does have a gear shop where you can pick up essentials you may have forgotten to pack.
Our hikes through Patagonia's captivating rugged terrain climb rocky and sometimes uneven paths, many of which are remote and do not intersect with roads. Vehicles will get us to and from the trailheads, but due to the nature of these trails, we won't see our vehicles along the route. Ample trail support in the form of snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.
Most hikes on this itinerary are inside Torres del Paine National Park, where regulations require a certified local guide to accompany us at all times. Though we offer as much flexibility as we can by occasionally dividing into groups based on walking pace, keep in mind that these guided group hikes are a different experience than the ultra-flexible support model on other Backroads walking & hiking trips. We’re confident that hiking in this bucket-list location is well worth abiding by the extra rules.
