Itinerary
Days 1-2
Our local guides bring to life the intertwined cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia • Sail and kayak through the World Heritage landscape of Halong Bay, exploring its hidden beaches, lagoons and photogenic caves • Ride in a bicycle rickshaw through narrow streets packed with food vendors and flower stalls • Partake in a sunrise tai chi class • Cruise into the bay, where karst cliffs jut out of the water • Discover the isle of Cát Bà on foot.
Nights 1-2
These fully equipped boats allow us to explore Halong Bay's spectacular karst formations by day, then retreat to quiet coves at night. Though rooms, with attached bathrooms, are small and basic, we'll be aboard the most comfortable boats on the more exclusive parts of the bay—on a charter just for Backroads.
Day 3
Savor breakfast aboard our junk boat as we sail to the mainland • Walk through Hanoi's Old Quarter, famous for its 36 guilds—named for the artisans and traders that have made their home here for some 2,000 years • Pull up a stool and get a taste of local culture with a street-side bia hoi (fresh beer) • Visit Hoa Lo Prison, colloquially known as the “Hanoi Hilton.”
Night 3
This five-star historic landmark is a French colonial gem set in the heart of old Hanoi. Condé Nast Traveler Gold List. Travel + Leisure World's Best. (pool, spa)
Day 4
Walk through fishing villages lining the central coast • Explore imperial Hué, with its centuries-old palaces and temples • For a unique look at everyday life, you're welcomed into a traditional home • Venture into the imposing citadel.

Ride a dragon boat down the Perfume River and stroll through regal mausoleums • Wander the streets of Hoi An, an ancient trading town with gorgeously preserved architecture • Pop into a bustling tailor shop or famous eatery to experience the local culture • Revel in the sea breezes as you traverse Vietnam's central coast • Get a feel for rural life on Cam Kim Island • Learn the secret to local dishes in a cooking class.
Nights 5-6
This luxury French colonial hideaway is set on the edge of the picturesque Thu Bon River near the heart of town. (pool, spa)
Days 7-10
Behold the remains of Cambodia's ancient Khmer Empire—iconic temples, giant carved images and beautiful bas-relief • Explore the stilted villages on the edge of massive Ton Le Sap Lake—a UNESCO biosphere reserve • Watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat and listen to the stories behind the carvings.

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
On Halong Bay, we use the nicest boats that head to our favorite hidden beaches and secluded lagoons. Our traditional Chinese-style junk boats are consistently comfortable, offer an appropriate number of cabins so we can have the boat all to ourselves, and are allowed to visit the more exclusive parts of the bay.
As wonderfully fulfilling as travel is in Vietnam and Cambodia, it's not always easy. Even something as simple as crossing the road can be a challenge (watch out for that scooter!). Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, but we can't remove haze and noise from the air, or replace poorly maintained paths—it's all part of the experience here.
