December 2024
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today announced its travel trends for 2025 based on early guest bookings. From women-only departures and acoustic (non-electric) bike tours to Portugal’s most intriguing islands and the Alps, the company is seeing interest across a variety of travel styles, ages and locations around the world.
Backroads Top Active Travel Trends for 2025
Women-Only Trips
Exclusive adventures just for women—whether traveling solo or with friends, with sisters or multiple generations of female family members—will continue to gain traction. Backroads expects guests on its Women’s Adventures Walking & Hiking Tours will more than double in 2025 compared to 2024. Trending Backroads Trips: Ireland Women’s Walking & Hiking Tour; A Taste of Camino de Santiago Women’s Walking & Hiking Tour.
Challenging Hiking amid Mountain Majesty
The mountains are calling and travelers are keen to hit those mountain trails. Backroads is seeing high demand for trips featuring rigorous alpine hiking that allows for more trail time and up-close exploration of a region. Trending Backroads Trips: Chile’s Patagonia Walking & Hiking Tours; Italy’s Dolomites Walking & Hiking Tour; Norway’s Lofoten Islands Walking & Hiking Tour and Peru’s Lodge-to-Lodge Trekking Tour.
Epic Regions for Easy-Does-It Travelers
While some travelers seek out challenging treks, others want to explore thrill-worthy destinations at a more relaxed pace, with plenty of options for leisure and cultural pursuits. “Chill seekers” in search of just the right amount of activity paired with stunning natural beauty and R&R are eager to discover their own tempo, savoring the journey as they go. Trending Backroads Trips: Dolce Tempo easygoing tours in the Canadian Rockies, Peru, Lapland and the Austrian Alps.
Portugal Islands Paradise
The lush landscapes, dramatic coastlines and beautiful beaches of Madeira and the Azores started to attract attention post-COVID from globetrotters in search of new off-the-beaten-path destinations. Airlines expanded their flight schedules, making these gorgeous islands more accessible. Backroads launched trips in the region in 2024 and has doubled departure dates for 2025 due to enthusiastic guest interest. Trending Backroads Trips: Portugal’s Madeira Walking & Hiking Tour and Azores Multi-Adventure Tour.
Under-the-Radar Destinations
For adventurous travelers whose theme song is Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere,” the appeal of lesser-known places continues. People looking for travel destinations with well-rounded appeal, unique scenery and premiere accommodations are discovering destinations like Belfast, Newfoundland, the Baltics and Tasmania. Trending Backroads Trips: Canada’s Gulf Islands tours; Norway’s Ålesund Multi-Adventure Tour and Australia’s Tasmania Multi-Adventure Tour.
Getting Back to Basics
Traveling by bicycle—in any of its forms—is a great way to see the world. While e-bikes have become a popular option for many cyclists, Backroads’ new Unplugged Bike Tours (non e-bike trips) are specifically for cyclists looking to get back to exploring with raw pedal power and who enjoy the camaraderie of others looking for the same experience. Trending Backroads Trip: Spain’s Mallorca Unplugged Bike Tour.
Chasing Dark Skies & Eclipses
There’s much to love about the great outdoors after the sun sets. Eclipse chasing, stargazing and glamping are becoming increasingly popular with travelers, whether setting their sights on European destinations located within the path of totality during the 2026 solar eclipse or glamping and s’more-making under the stars in locations such as Utah’s Bryce and Zion National Parks. Trending Backroads Trips: Iceland Northern Lights Multi-Adventure Tour and Backroads and Under Canvas collaborations in Utah, Yellowstone and South Dakota.
Vive la France – Paris & Beyond!
While tourists from around the world journeyed to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, France, as a whole, will continue to be a top European travel destination. From World War II history in Normandy and Brittany to wine tasting and gastronomy in the Loire Valley and cruising down the Seine and Rhône Rivers, France has it all when it comes to active travel. Trending Backroads Trip: Bordeaux & Dordogne Bike Tour.
Winter Travel’s Heating Up
Whether it’s snowshoeing and winter wildlife-viewing in snow-wrapped US national parks or escaping to warmer climes for beach hikes and coastal biking, as temperatures dip, winter travel continues to increase in popularity. Instead of daydreaming about a vacation during this time of year, some travelers are starting to make it their primary travel season. Trending Backroads Trips: Chile’s Lake District Walking & Hiking Tour; California’s Palm Springs & Joshua Tree tours and Dolomites Snow Adventure Tour.
Collecting Experiences vs. Things
Travelers are looking for itineraries that prioritize connections to nature, culture and community, and are even giving this immersive experience of travel as gifts. Active travel is a unique experiential activity that creates indelible memories, whether it’s hiking the stunning coastline of Italy’s Cinque Terre, painting traditional oxcarts in Costa Rica or celebrating a 70th birthday with extended family in the California Wine Country. For families, a special trip can connect generations, bridge geographic distances and provide opportunities to celebrate milestone events together with a one-of-a-kind experience rather than something that can fit into a box. Trending Backroads Trips: Greenland & Iceland Walking & Hiking Tour and Bhutan Walking & Hiking Tour.
“Trends come and go, but the desire to explore new and inspiring places or return to favorites never goes out of style,” said Backroads Founder, President and CEO, Tom Hale. “For 45 years we’ve been listening to our guests, tracking booking patterns and spotting trends so we can create trips in the next new and inspiring places our guests want to explore."

November 2024
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today celebrates its most tenured Trip Leader, Paul Smith, as he accomplishes a professional milestone. Smith was hired in 1990, and since then he’s taken more than 6,352 guests on vacations in 18 regions in the U.S. plus 15 countries worldwide. What started as a part-time job turned into a lifelong passion and a storied career with the company, culminating in him becoming the first Backroads Trip Leader to lead 400 active adventures.
Smith met his wife, Jo Zulaica—who was also a Backroads Trip Leader—leading his very first trip. They married two years later and led Backroads trips around the world together from Asia to New Zealand to the Puget Sound for 15 years. “It has been the biggest honor and privilege of my life to work here, lead trips here—just be at Backroads,” said Smith. “It’s amazing to recognize just how lucky I’ve been.” Smith has spent the majority of his years at Backroads leading trips in the San Juan Islands (109), New Zealand (63), China (41) and Bali (36), along with the California Wine Country, Alaska, Hawaii and the Canyons. His 400th will be a Biking Trip in California’s Death Valley in November.
Over 34 years, Smith has honed his skills and resourcefulness and developed deep regional knowledge that has made him an invaluable asset to the company and to the Backroads Trip Leaders who he’s trained and worked alongside. Exemplifying the leadership that Backroads is known for, Smith is a mentor to new Trip Leaders, who at once must be exceptional problem solvers, multi-taskers, cultural ambassadors and more. The company is currently looking to fill more than 200 Trip Leader and Trip Prep positions for the 2025 season.
“Paul Smith is a rock star at Backroads,” said Backroads Founder, President and CEO, Tom Hale. “He’s the model for what excellence in a Backroads Trip Leader looks like, and it’s been an honor knowing him and having him represent our company for over three decades. His passion for people and places, outgoing personality and commitment to high quality are the attributes that drive Backroads as a company, and we’re more than thrilled to celebrate his incredible achievement of 400 trips led.”
Backroads Trip Leaders are highly regarded as the best in the business with guests consistently rating their performance at 9.8 out of 10. October 2024
Backroads, the leader in active travel today announced the expansion of Women’s Adventures with more than 40 Walking & Hiking trips and 125 departures available in 2025. Exclusively for women—solo travelers, mothers, daughters, sisters and friends—Women’s Adventures were an instant hit after the announcement last fall, with 2024 trips quickly booking to capacity. The first trip ran in May, and the offering continues to gain momentum and garner rave reviews as word spreads. The company projects more than a 200 percent increase in Women’s Adventures guests for 2025. The collection features the same expert trip design, flexible itineraries, exceptional Trip Leaders and world-class support that are hallmarks of all Backroads trips.
Throughout Backroads’ 45-year history, women have consistently comprised more than 50% of its Executive Team and Trip Leader population. Founder Tom Hale’s wife Liz and daughter Avery were the inspiration behind Women’s Adventures, which celebrate the unique camaraderie and chemistry of all-women groups and the lens through which they see and explore the world.
“Women of all ages have been a significant part of the growth in active adventure travel so we expected our Women’s Adventures would be well received, but we are thrilled with the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response,” said Backroads Executive Vice President, Avery Hale Smith. “We’ve heard from many women—solo travelers and those who travel with friends or family—that the trips feel supportive, inspiring and rejuvenating and they love how the camaraderie and bonding is so organic."

September 2024
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today announced the debut of Unplugged Bike Tours for cyclists looking to explore the world on two wheels under their own power, with no electric-assist, in the company of other riders who enjoy doing the same. The rollout complements Backroads’ robust selection of bike and e-bike tours with the addition of 83 acoustic bike trips in some of the company’s most popular cycling destinations in the U.S., Italy, France, Spain, Canada and Japan.
Unplugged Bike Tours share the same expert design as all Backroads trips, with multiple Trip Leaders and vans to support riders of different levels and interests. Also included are Backroads custom titanium Performance and Touring bikes, which offer the ideal combination of lightness, handling and comfort to navigate whatever ups and downs the road may bring. To preserve the spirit and intent of Unplugged Bike Tours, Backroads will only allow e-bikes for a limited number of guests who want to keep pace with an acoustic cycling companion.
“When I started Backroads in 1979 we were running trips across the American west out of my garage. Back then, it was all about the camaraderie on the road and tackling a big climb together, then riding into lunch to celebrate,” said Backroads Founder, President and CEO, Tom Hale. “We created our new Unplugged Bike Tours for cyclists who are nostalgic for those simpler days, before bicycles were motorized. We’re excited to offer guests even more ways to experience a destination together, with the same dedication to quality that we’ve always applied to everything we do.”
As part of the release of Unplugged Bike Tours, guests are invited to join Backroads Founder Tom Hale on the California Wine Country trip in May (limited space available). Members of Backroads’ Executive Team will also be joining additional Unplugged trips in various locations, including in Italy and Spain, throughout the year.

August 2024
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today announced the release of Private Reserve, a collection of trips and dates available exclusively for private bookings for a limited time, through December 31. These hand-picked Biking, Walking & Hiking and Multi-Adventure trips offer departures for the company’s most sought-after European locations during the highly requested travel months in the fall. Destinations include Portugal’s Algarve & Alentejo, Spanish Pyrenees to Costa Brava, German & Austrian Alps, Scottish Highlands, the Dolomites and Basque Country.
Backroads Private Reserve caters to the unique needs of private groups, giving them first access to some of the company’s most popular European trips before opening the dates to the public. With competition for travel dates—especially in September—at an all-time high, Backroads decided to offer a block of departures solely for private bookings. The company has been running trips for private groups for over four decades and recognizes the logistics involved in coordinating and booking a trip for multiple people with different schedules. Private Reserve gives private groups more options for active travel and more time to get members onboard, and offers a remarkable experience for groups, including smaller parties. While Backroads has over 6,000 dates available for booking, more people than ever are choosing to go private and these new dates are expected to fill fast.
Private Reserve trips for 2025 are available for booking now through December 31, 2024; on January 1, 2025, any unreserved dates will open to the general public.

“We know the effort it takes to corral your private group, choose a destination and settle on a workable date. We also know what it feels like when everything finally comes together, only to fall apart when you discover that trip has been booked by someone else in the meantime,” said Backroads Founder, President and CEO, Tom Hale. “We created Private Reserve to give private groups first crack at those hard-to-get locations and dates—especially those coveted September departures—giving organizers a little more breathing room and less competition for preferred dates. And with our online private trips search tool, reserving that ideal date for your group is a snap.”

I’m especially excited about Home Base, and I think our guests will be too. My wife Liz and I went on our Brenta Dolomites hiking trip last year, which features just one hotel, and we thought unpacking once could be an appealing option in even more regions. Backroads, the leader in active travel, today announced eight exciting new Walking & Hiking Trips in its Women’s Adventures collection for 2025–perfect for girlfriend getaways, mother/daughter vacations and female guests traveling on their own. Backroads Women’s Adventures offer multiple daily route options along with opportunities for relaxation and pampering with stays at esteemed hotels. When the company introduced these new trips in August 2023, the response surpassed expectations with demand for even more dates and destinations. Expanding on the initial collection of 26 trips selected specifically with women in mind, Backroads continues to add new Women’s Adventures itineraries across the globe. The inaugural women’s trips depart this month; the company expects the latest new additions to be just as well-received and to book quickly.
“We knew our Women’s Adventures would resonate with women of all ages and stages of life, whether they were looking for traveling companions of the same gender or simply wanting to escape with good friends and experience a new or favorite destination,” said Tom Hale, Backroads Founder, President and CEO. “This collection was inspired by my wife, Liz, and my daughter Avery, who recently became a mom herself. It’s no coincidence that the announcement of these new trips comes right before Mother’s Day. The list includes a few of their favorite destinations.”

December 2023
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today released its top ten active travel trends for 2024. Based on early guest bookings, Biking, Walking & Hiking and Multi-Adventure activities are equally popular. More people are seeking unique and adventurous outdoor experiences and Backroads is meeting this demand by offering even more choice in more destinations for all kinds of travelers.
Backroads Top Ten Active Travel Trends for 2024
Women-Only Trips
When Backroads launched Women’s Adventures in August 2023 with Walking & Hiking trips, they were in such demand that they sold out quickly, prompting the company to add additional destinations as well as Biking and Multi-Adventure tours to keep up with the strong interest.
E-bikes & Easygoing Travel
The use of electric-assist bikes continues to grow in popularity since Backroads introduced their custom-designed e-bikes in 2013. Backroads also offers dedicated e-bike tours as part of its Dolce Tempo collection, which was designed to be enjoyed at a more easygoing pace. Backroads Dolce Tempo itineraries are attracting more guests who are new to active travel or looking for additional downtime for spa treatments, shopping or other individual interests and activities.
Embarking on a Pilgrimage Reset
People seeking active journeys are being drawn to the world’s traditional pilgrimage routes. Spain and Portugal’s Camino de Santiago continues in popularity as a bucket-list destination, and Backroads is excited to unveil a new Taste of Camino de Santiago Bike Tour in 2024 to complement its popular Walking & Hiking, Dolce Tempo and Women’s Adventure trips in the region.
The Darling of Scandinavia
Norway tops many 2024 travel destination lists as travelers want to experience the country’s spirit of community, beautiful and accessible natural landscape and outdoor lifestyle. Bookings reveal that Backroads guests are eager to travel on their Norway’s Fjords tours and the Lofoten Islands. In fact, all Northern Europe trips are popular, with a surge in bookings for Biking, Walking & Hiking and Multi-Adventure tours in the region.
Family Travel for All Ages
An increasing number of families are discovering that active travel is a way to connect, have fun and explore the world together, and that trend is reflected in the growth of Backroads Family Trips offering – especially for families with college-age children. Backroads is the only active travel company to run Family Trips designed for three distinct age groups: Families with Teens & Kids (best for ages 9+), Families with Older Teens & 20s (one or more kids age 17+) and Families with Young Adults 20s & Beyond (one or more kids age 20+).
Ocean & River Cruising
Backroads pioneered a new way to cruise, and travelers have discovered that exploring actively while living aboard a luxurious small ocean or river ship is a great way to see more and cover great distances. Guests unpack only once and get all the benefits of an active Backroads vacation while cruising some of the world’s most beautiful rivers and oceans.
Booking Early
The trend of booking future travel earlier than what used to be the norm started post-pandemic and continues with 2024 bookings. Backroads guests are reserving their 2024 trips early to take advantage of the best selection and availability. Nearly 40% of Backroads 2024 guest bookings will be in by the end of 2023.
Going Private
Whether it’s a group of friends, a corporate retreat or multiple generations of a family, going private is more popular than ever and Backroads makes it easier than any other travel company. Taking over an existing scheduled Backroads departure allows for a turnkey yet flexible and personal experience for everyone.
Shoulder Season
Backroads is seeing a bigger boom in travel earlier in the spring and even later in the fall than before as travelers look to beat the summer crowds when kids are back at school, enjoy more temperate weather and better deals on airfare. The company has added more active adventures in the 2024 shoulder season to keep up with demand.
Hut-to-Hut Trekking
Backroads has seen a surge in interest for “hut-to-hut" hiking trips with people wanting to travel under their own power and at their own pace without transportation to move between locations. These trips are a chance to be fully immersed in nature on challenging hikes by day, with unique lodge experiences each night. Backroads’ hut-to-hut or lodge-to-lodge trips in the Dolomites, Peru, Nepal, the Pyrenees and the Italian & Swiss Alps are in high demand for the coming year.
“In 1979 Backroads essentially set the trend for active adventure travel and 2024 is no different,” said Tom Hale, Backroads Founder, President and CEO. “Backroads has always been about giving guests the most flexibility and choice when they’re on vacation and the trends we’re seeing for 2024, from Women’s Adventures to e-bikes and family travel, offer something for every type of active traveler with challenging bike rides and hikes to easygoing Dolce Tempo trips. So now, more than ever, is the time to book your next active adventure.”

November 2023
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today announced a new collaboration with Trust for Public Land (TPL) and affirmed its continued support of World Bicycle Relief (WBR) and the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund (ATCF). Backroads is proud to align with these and other organizations committed to protecting, preserving and giving back to the communities, cultures and natural landscapes that make adventure travel such an enriching experience for so many.
In September 2023, Backroads contributed in-kind donations and participated in a matching fundraising campaign with Trust for Public Land in recognition of National Public Lands Day. TPL’s initiatives to ensure access to safe, quality green spaces, create and restore public trails and expand and protect national and public parks are improving health and well-being in communities across the United States. Also in the fall, Backroads donated a trip for two to Yosemite that was auctioned at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy’s annual Trails Forever Gala Dinner.
World Bicycle Relief empowers people in low-income rural communities—especially women and girls—by providing high-quality bicycles to access health care, education and economic opportunities. Backroads has renewed support of WBR and their goal to distribute one million Buffalo Bikes to disadvantaged communities by 2025. Earlier this year on World Bicycle Day (June 3), Backroads employees and guests across the globe participated in WBR’s Pedal to Empower campaign. Backroads matched the effort dollar-for-mile and has also committed to a Giving Tuesday matching campaign. In addition, Backroads proactively lets guests opt out of receiving a pre-trip t-shirt or jersey and instead reallocate that money to WBR.
As a founding and sustaining member of the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund (ATCF), Backroads supports the organization’s view that adventure travelers can be stewards for the planet and a force for good. Through ATCF, Backroads, along with like-minded companies in adventure travel and outdoor pursuits, identifies, funds, implements and monitors the impact of projects designed to protect and preserve the cultural and recreational integrity of threatened communities, cultures and wild landscapes.
The values of generosity and personal responsibility have been a tenet of Backroads culture since its inception. In that spirit, individual Backroads’ employees also took the initiative to spotlight important causes and rally support for people in need in 2023. Whether it was fundraising for victims of the wildfires in Maui, bringing awareness to the plight of Ukrainian refugees and asylum seekers in Greece, donating equipment for youth outdoor education programs, or volunteering their time, Backroads leaders and staff found meaningful ways to give back.
“At Backroads we believe it’s our duty to protect and preserve the landscapes we run our trips in and to give back to those communities,” said Tom Hale, Backroads Founder, President and CEO. “That’s why, over the years, we’ve invested in and continue to support organizations like World Bicycle Relief, Trust for Public Land and others, whose values are in sync with Backroads. The holiday season is always a great time for us as a company, and as global citizens, to reflect and be inspired to do what we can to make the world a better place.”
On this Giving Tuesday, Backroads encourages people to join millions of others around the world in giving back to organizations whose causes they believe in.

October 2023
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today announced an expansion of its top management with the promotion of Avery Hale Smith to Executive Vice President. Hale Smith joined Backroads in 2020 to head up the Sales and Guest Experience departments after previous leadership roles in new business development and customer experience at EVERFI and ClearPoint Strategy. Her adventurous spirit and uncompromising values—both traits she inherited from her entrepreneurial father, Backroads Founder, President and CEO Tom Hale—flourished and matured throughout her childhood and are helping to drive innovation across the company. “I've been lucky enough to grow up alongside Backroads and watch its evolution over time,” said Hale Smith. “I’m looking forward to continuing to work with my dad, learning from him and helping guide Backroads into the future as we continue to grow and strive for excellence in all areas of the company.”
Rounding out the new executive team is Sean Harrington, who assumes the role of Chief Operating Officer after having previously been with the company as a Trip Leader. Harrington brings his expertise in the travel industry as well as successes in business development, technology solutions, sales and general management after serving in executive positions at Fortune 500 corporations and high-growth technology companies. “My passion has always centered on active travel, and returning to Backroads truly feels like coming home,” said Harrington. “I'm excited to work alongside Tom and Avery and the entire executive team, applying the insights I've garnered from beyond the travel sector.”
The addition of Hale Smith and Harrington adds depth to a visionary leadership team at a time of unprecedented growth for the company. Both Hale Smith and Harrington report directly to Tom Hale.
As Backroads ushers in a new era of creativity and management, it celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2024 with the rollout of over 30 new trips, which include departures to new regions, as well as Dolce Tempo Family Trips and recently launched Women’s Adventures. Following the overwhelming positive feedback received upon the initial release of women-only Walking & Hiking trips, the company added Biking and Multi-Adventure Trips to the new offering.
“In 1979, when I walked away from a promising environmental planning career at age 26 to bike around the Western United States, little did I know that the bike touring company I conceived of during that 5,000-mile ride would become what Backroads is today,” said Backroads Founder, President and CEO Tom Hale. “Since that time, Backroads has evolved from bicycle touring to a full-scale adventure travel company. It has been a journey, and if I’ve learned anything over the years at the helm of Backroads, it’s that journeys are best shared with others. Avery joined Backroads at the same age I was when I started the company, and I’m thrilled that she has chosen to accompany me on the continued adventure that is Backroads, creating amazing experiences and introducing the wonders of active travel to more people.”
Backroads’ collection of more than 30 new trips— including Denmark Islands, Finland Northern Lights, Portugal’s Azores, Madrid to Valencia, Tasmania, Turkey and Women’s Adventures —are all available for immediate booking. For the complete list of Backroads trips and for more information, visit backroads.com or call 800-462-2848.

August 2023
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today announced the launch of Women’s Adventures, a new offer exclusively for women travelers. Since 1979 when Backroads was founded by Tom Hale, more than 50% of its executive team and leader population have been women. The launch of Backroads Women’s Adventures, inspired by his wife Liz and daughter Avery, is a highly anticipated addition that celebrates this commitment, as well as the unique camaraderie and chemistry of all-women groups.
Set in some of the world’s most beautiful places, these new vacations feature 26 of Backroads’ most popular Walking & Hiking itineraries in bucket-list destinations, both far flung and backyard favorites, from Arizona, Yosemite and Yellowstone to England, Peru and Bhutan. While the all-women trips will naturally have a different dynamic than other Backroads’ trips, they will offer the same commitment to excellence, flexible itineraries and exceptional Trip Leaders for which Backroads is known.
"As part of the Hale family business, I've been lucky enough to take many Backroads trips, several of them with women only to destinations like Argentina, Vietnam/Cambodia and the California Wine Country," said Liz Hale, Backroads’ Director of Community Partnerships. "There’s nothing like traveling with a group of women. The shared experience on and off the trail, the sense of adventure, the deep connections and conversations, easy laughter and the joy of sisterhood that forms and strengthens as we create new lifelong memories.”
Women seeking outdoor and cultural travel experiences in combination with stylish creature comforts—whether traveling solo or with female friends or family members—has been a growing trend over the years. “Getting away with your kids on a summer vacation is a great bonding experience no matter how old they are,” said Backroads Founder & President, Tom Hale. “Our kids grew up on Backroads trips and as they got older, I realized how important it was to have activities and meals designed for specific age groups. That’s why Backroads offers family trips for three distinct age categories. Teens and young adults want to engage with their peers, and the same goes for the younger ones. Meanwhile, parents are connecting with other parents, and there’s this great synergy happening between people in the same stage of life. December 2022
Backroads, the leader in active travel, today announced its 2023 top adventure travel trends based on guest bookings to date. From people reserving trips further in advance than in prior years to increased demand for active adventure vacations for all ages and fitness abilities, Backroads is tracking interesting shifts in how and where people want to travel next year. Whether they are seeking an island escape, a US national park, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail or a seaside village in Northern Europe, Americans are on the go again and the following exciting trends are emerging.
Backroads’ 2023 Top Trends (based on early booking data)
FOMO Is Motivating Earlier Bookings Than Ever Before – In 2022, travelers were inclined to make last-minute bookings, driven by the fear of change (i.e., COVID-19 regulations, canceled flights, etc.). Backroads is currently seeing a big increase in bookings more than 9 months out for 2023 departures as travelers book milestone celebrations and private group travel, and those with FOMO (fear of missing out) organize and secure vacation plans for next year – especially to bucket-list destinations.
Northern Europe Is Trending Hot – For decades, the countries of Western Europe were all-the-rage destinations. Spain, Italy and France remain extremely popular, but countries making many 2023 bucket lists now include Norway, Denmark, Ireland, Scotland and other nations in the northern part of the continent.
Wine- and Spirits-Focused Adventures Are Having a Moment – The wine regions of California and Europe continue to be enduring favorites, but spirits tours are also of great interest among a growing segment of travelers. Trips spotlighting spirits like scotch and whiskey, along with a region’s history, culture and culinary delights, are enticing adventure travelers to enjoy beautiful biking along with walking and hiking in Cuba, Kentucky, Ireland and Scotland.
Wild Places and Outdoor Spaces: US National Parks Continue to Sell Out – Americans have rediscovered US national parks, where they can spot wildlife and explore some of the country’s most extraordinary landscapes with friends and family. The desire to experience America’s treasured outdoor spaces actively continues in 2023 with Glacier, Yellowstone & Tetons, Maine’s Acadia, Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula and Bryce, Zion & Grand Canyon topping the list.
Islands and Tropical Adventures Are the Ultimate Escape – Americans’ unrelenting digital lives can take a toll, and islands have always been regarded as a refuge from the modern world. In 2023, the allure of active adventures featuring beaches, wildlife and warm weather is evident, especially to places like Bali, Hawaii, Greece, Sardinia & Corsica, Sicily, Spain and the San Juan Islands.
Active River and Ocean Cruises Navigate Their Escalating Popularity – Traveling aboard a small luxury ship, actively exploring multiple destinations and only unpacking once gets a big thumbs up from guests booking Backroads Active River or Ocean Cruises for next year. Trips along the Danube, Seine and Portugal’s Douro Rivers, as well as Venice to Croatia, Iceland by Sea, Chile’s Patagonia & Fjords and Tahiti are proving to be the biggest draws.
Luxury Active Travel Happening at a More Relaxed Pace – When it comes to active travel, “active” is in the eye of the beholder. People are looking for just the right amount of activity coupled with the right amount of leisure time. This is the idea behind Backroads’ Dolce Tempo Trips, which strike that optimal balance between “doing” and “being,” so that they appeal to an even wider range of travelers. The most popular of these adventure tours are in Netherlands & Belgium, Puglia, Ireland, Tuscany and Spain.
E-bikes Are Here to Stay – Today e-bikes (electric-assist bikes) are in high demand and offered free to Backroads guests on most Biking and Multi-Adventure Tours and all Dolce Tempo vacations with biking activities. While many travelers prefer regular “acoustic” bikes, traveling companions of different fitness and biking abilities are increasingly discovering that e-bikes not only help level the playing field, they also provide a boost when needed to help conquer hills. Not to mention, they’re just plain fun!
“Health and fitness have always been a big part of my life and factor into the design of every Backroads trip,” said Backroads Founder and President, Tom Hale. “Whether it’s hiking, biking, taking it slow on a Dolce Tempo trip or traveling with family, the desire to be active on vacation is definitely not a new trend, just a growing one. Backroads has been helping people actively discover the world for 43 years, and we look forward to doing so for many more.”
