For Alex, travel has been a way of life for years—from running marathons in Turkey and Kazakhstan to volunteering with wildlife in Bolivia and Vietnam. Back stateside, his passion for adventure led him to mush dogs for two winters in Oregon, move to a yurt in rural Idaho, live in a van outside Zion for one beautiful spring, and to work in Old Faithful and many Glacier hotels. When not working, he lives with his fiancée and their cats in Montana.

The Iditarod is one of the most epic dogsledding races in the world, but outside of Alaska, few even know what it is. How long is it? Why is it known as "the last great race"? And do they really race with dogs? As a man who has mushed a few teams myself, I like to start with a brief history, dispel some common misconceptions, and then relate some of my favorite facts about the race.
