Tommaso Spinelli

Born in the coastal town of Livorno, Tuscany, Tommaso moved to Rome when he turned eighteen to earn a BA in Acting at Italy’s National Film School. Traveling around Italy and abroad to work with several European directors, he has appeared in a number of feature-length and short films. Tommaso has taught English through acting to journalists and thespians, as well as coached business managers in public speaking. When he’s not leading Backroads adventures around the world, Tommaso lives in New York City, where he directs documentaries and searches for stories to tell.

Twelve Reasons to Choose Active Adventure Travel

Over the course of history humans have embarked on adventures and expeditions to discover new territories, gain wisdom and question the known. In the 1200s, Marco Polo was the first explorer to set out on a groundbreaking journey to Asia and China. The Portuguese Vasco da Gama was the first European to reach India. Sir Francis Drake was the first to circumnavigate the world in 1580. But it wasn't until the mid-1800s that adventurers began to push the limits of mountain climbing and river rafting, ascending famous peaks and mountain passes, inspiring people to attempt their own expeditions and experience the unknown.

Back to my Tuscan Roots

We always think of traveling as a way to discover the world and to learn about different cultures. For me, travelling is also about returning to my roots and rediscovering who I am. Leading the Active Gourmet trip in Tuscany is a chance to see my homeland through the eyes of our guests and to learn new things about myself. After all, food and wine are just catalysts. In Italy it's all about sharing. And talking. Very loudly!
